Kobo Daishi, renowned monk who established Shinbone Buddhism, joined a Japanese envoy that traveled by boat to China to visit the Tang Dynasty. Coming back to Japan in 806 northeast of present-day Nara Prefecture.
This is said to be the first cultivation of "Yamato-Cha."
It is still richly cultivated mainly in the mountains of Yamato Plateau, the northeast of Nara.
